[#English Grammar] Adjective Order

 

Adjectives are always singular. When two or more adjectives are used before a noun, they usually follow the order given in this chart.

  1. Opinion / Quality
    : beautiful, expensive, cheap, tasty, antique, common, friendly, funny, uncomfortable, unusual, interesting, lovely, elegant, fashionable, traditional,
  2. Size
    : big, small, huge, little,
  3. Age
    : old, new, ancient, modern, traditional, teenage, elderly,
  4. Shape
    : round, square, triangular, rectangular, 
  5. Color
    : yellow, green, orange,
  6. Origin
    : Chinese, French, Brazilian, American, Korean, Omani(City state next to Saudi)
  7. Material
    : glass, leather, metal, glass, ceramic, plastic, cotton, wool, silk, oval
  8. Kind / Purpose
    : serving, running, hiking, jogging, racing, wedding, writing, medical
※Caution: There are few "-ing" words in Adjective.

Ex)

Rosario lives in a big old house in the country.
We ate dinner at the new French restaurant in our neighborhood.
Ming gave Ella and Mike a beautiful glass serving dish as a gift.
Eduardo bought a pair of expensive leather running shoes.
The pretty long French flowers in the nice glass vase had lots of colors, from light pink to dark red.
In the country small old house, the warm fireplace gave a cozy felling on cold nights.
The strong thin Samsung phone had the latest technology and a simple design.
A small new bright painting hung on the clean, white walls of the art gallery.
The fancy old dark-brown desk looked really nice.
Leila wore a beautiful green silk skirt from India.

We do not usually use more than three adjectives before a noun. We use two or three adjectives and then add additional descriptive phrases after the noun.

  • 90% > Almost certainly
  • 80% > Likely
  • 70% > Probably
  • 60% > Perhaps
  • 50% > Maybe
  • 40% > Unlikely
  • 30% > Improbably
  • 20% > Doubtfully
  • 10% > Almost never
  • 0% > Definitely not
